ISAIAH 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.
Appoint — d) ordain
Ordain — d) to appoint; decree; establish
Zion — c) a term for Jerusalem – the city of David – a guiding pillar – a desert, solitary place, wilderness
These are God’s elect who are suffering in the wilderness. Some may be suffering the pain of persecution and rejection that comes from walking as Jesus walked. I have read stories lately of many in other countries who have suffered tragically at the hands of anti-Christian governments. They have been murdered and lost their homes. Many are hiding for fear of losing their lives, having to depend on others for their needed food and supplies.
We are so blessed. We still suffer at the hands of a devil who never gives up. Who continuously comes to kill, steal, and destroy. If you win the battle in one area, he regroups and comes at you in another area. But it is only when we go forward that we encounter the giants. We must hang on to every promise we are given and know that the Lord is with us in every pain , problem and persecution that we endure. He will always give us back more for our times of suffering by giving us a blessed afterward.
He uses the word establish many times in the scriptures. It means to make us stable and secure. We need to be strong and immovable and hold our position In Christ. That is what He will do for us when we suffer for Him.
These precious souls that have suffered so greatly have received beauty for ashes in ways unknown to others. He turns their sadness into joy and takes away the garment of heaviness. No one can lift the soul out of the pits of despair and discouragement but the Spirit of the Lord. He makes them strong as the strongest of oaks as only He can grow.
He does this because He loves us and wants to share all of His goodness with those who love Him and are willing to live for Him. He could easily glorify Himself thousands of ways. But he chooses to do it through weak flesh and lift them up out of the pits of despair. What a great God He is and How He deserves all of our Praise Forever and Ever!
SUBJECT — DEPTHS — CH SPURGEON
Good people may be in deep temporal trouble, but in such cases look only to their God. They are then more earnest in prayer than at other times. The depth of their distress moves the depth of their being and from the bottom of their heart a great and bitter cry rises to the living God. He who cries out of the depths will soon sing in the heights.
