PSALM 51:17

My sacrifice (the sacrifice acceptable) to God is a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart (broken down with sorrow for sin and humbly and thoroughly penitent) such, O God, You will not despise. Amp.

DEFINITIONS

Contrite -d) crushed in spirit by remorse or guilt.

Penitent -d) sorry for having done wrong and willing to atone, repentant.

I have heard preachers talk about repentance in their sermons many times. But most of what I have heard was just going to God and saying you are sorry and receiving forgiveness. He never remembers your sin. It is wiped away forever. Just confess your sins to the Lord and you will go to heaven. Sounds good doesn’t it! But is it right? What is missing?

We cannot just sin – confess, sin – confess. It must be backed up by a hatred for the sin and a turning away from it in your heart. You can tell the Lord all day long how sorry you are. He will not believe you until you decide to really stop doing that thing because it is so unlike the Lord with Whom you love with all your heart and would give it up in a flash if you had the power to do so. That is a contrite heart. Then He will give you the power to do so.

Acts 2:38 And Peter answered them, Repent – change your views, and purpose to accept the will of God in your inner selves instead of rejecting it — and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Amp.

The Lord has a plan for each of us. We must give Him full control of our life and follow Him doing His will instead of our own. Then He is Lord of our Life. Anything else is a false pretender. He will say depart from Me, I never knew you.

If we do not repent of the sins that the Lord has convicted us of, the amount of Holy Spirit we do have will leak out and we will not have enough power to stand against the attacks of the enemy. You cannot spend all day doing you own pleasure and defeat the enemy.

Too many Christians’ waste valuable time in front of the television instead of prayer and worship. Eventually things in their life will fall apart and they will wonder why because so many others are wasting time. But if we repent and are truly sorry for our sin, He will not despise.
