PSALM 5:11-12 But let all those who take refuge and put their trust in You rejoice; let them ever sing and shout for joy, because You make a covering over them and defend them; let those also who love Your name be joyful in You and be in high spirits.
12. For You, Lord, will bless the (uncompromisingly) righteous (him who is upright and in right standing with You); as with a shield You will surround him with good will (pleasure and favor).
Defend – d) to guard from attack, protect.
Favor – d) friendly regard; approval, kind indulgence, unfair partiality.
Name – c) character
When we are blessed with the ability to walk in the Spirit and put our trust in the Lord and make Him our safe refuge, we are in the place where blessings abound. He is telling us to rejoice and shout for joy. But this will come flowing out of the Holy Spirit within us and not from ourselves.
We can sense His protection and enjoy His favor. His favor just makes me fall in love with Him over and over. How could such a thing be? It really doesn’t take a lot to please Him. If you live with His approval, it makes you feel so special. How can He take the time and care for and look upon us with so much love and goodness? I do not know, but He does!
Verse 11 is saying, “let those who love Your name be joyful in You and be in high spirits.” When we love His name, we are loving His character. We have to spend time with Him and walk in obedience to the trials that He sends so we can get to know His character. Then we can personally experience how He reacts to us.
I believe that is why the Israelites went to the wilderness to learn how the Lord would provide for them and lead them. If they had been more obedient they would have drawn closer to Him in love and worship. But instead they murmured and complained. The only time they worshipped was after the blessings came. (Ex.15)
If only they had learned to worship before the blessing came they would not have had to stay in the wilderness. We must also learn to worship before we get the answers that we seek. He has given us every reason to be thankful and positive with the promise of His protection and His wonderful favor. (I am preaching to myself).
He is surrounding us with a shield that Satan cannot penetrate. We can always leave that protection and risk our safety. Not a smart thing to do. We have to learn our boundaries. There are places I do not go. I know when and where I am to go anywhere. He makes it clear to me. If I force my way, I am not safe. But why would I leave such a wonderful place?
Then there are always the times He will let Satan in because we need that trial in our life (like Job). But if we are patient and bear the trouble the right way and again not to murmur, being thankful and positive and in high spirits it will be over sooner. Again I am preaching to myself.
I believe one of the hardest things for us to learn is to be in high spirits when trials come and things go wrong. But that is just what we should always do. If we focus on the good things He has done for us — His protection and covering, His pleasure and favor — not to mention the many, many more blessings He gives, we really have nothing to complain about.
It is His promise to us to make all things work for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28. We know He cannot lie so we can trust!
