PSALM 116

7. Return to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you. Amp c

The Psalmist has been to death and back and suffered greatly. He called upon the Lord in his grief and torment and was delivered. It is not enough for the Lord just to deliver. But He does it bountifully. He loves to bless.

Bountiful -c) to treat a person well; benefit or requite; to ripen, bestow, recompense, reward.

Bounteous -d) giving without restraint; generous; abundant.

The Hebrew word for bountiful is “gamal” that also means to reward. The Psalmist has done nothing deserving a reward. He just suffered and cried to the Lord for help. This just shows us how wonderful the Lord is. His love is so different than ours.

He knows the human heart responds to love more than to rebuke. He wants us to love Him so He comes to us in our lowest point and pours in the oil and the wine of His love and goodness and it is just what we need.

He looks for new ways to bless. And not just to bless but to deal bountifully. He gives above and beyond all we can ever imagine. Most of us live so beneath what the Lord wants for us.

Although He will not give to us if we are still selfishly inclined to love the reward more than the Lord. But when the Lord comes and reveals His heart of love, it is pretty dumb to want anything more than Him. That is when He can give abundantly.
