PSALM 23
- The Lord is my shepherd (to feed, guide and shield me); I shall not lack.
- He makes me lie down in (fresh, tender) green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters.
- He refreshes and restores my life – my self; He leads me in the paths of righteousness (uprightness and right standing with Him – not for my earning it, but) for His name’s sake.
- Yes, though I walk through the deep, sunless valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil; for You are with me; Your rod to protect and your staff to guide, they comfort me.
- You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.
- Surely only goodness, mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life; and through the length of days the house of the Lord and His presence shall be my dwelling place. Amp.
We all know Psalm 23. It is used many times in funerals. I do not see it as only for the dead. I see many blessings in it for the living.
If we allow the Lord to lead us, He will lead us to a peaceful life. He will take such good care of us, so much better than we can care for ourselves. How many times do you go to the store and forget something? When He is in control, there is no lack or want.
How many times do we go to bed worrying about things we have no control over? If we cast our care and truly believe that He will make all things work for our good, we will not worry or fear tomorrow. Our waters will be calm.
We get up the next morning and find He makes everything new each morning and we are refreshed to begin a new day. He is leading me in a perfect direction because He is so good. Even when I have to deal with a painful loss, He is with me holding my hand leading me through, so I don’t have to be afraid. I know He will take care of everything. He always makes me happy even in the bad times.
Then there are times when I have opposition that I do not like. Somehow, He makes me come out of it looking good to my enemies even when I fail. He always forgives me and fills me with His Spirit to overflowing.
And He saves the best part for the end. He goes behind me with His goodness and mercy. He always makes everything work for good in My life because He promised. And as long as I follow Him and keep His commandments, I will get to enjoy His great love and presence because He comes to dwell with me.
He has truly given me the best and there really is no lack!
