“THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM” BIBLE STUDY AUGUST 28, 2024

MATTHEW 16

19. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. KJV

The Lord is talking to Peter about building His church upon the rock which is Peter. It could actually be Peter or He could mean the belief that Jesus is the Son of the living God. The whole chapter is a picture of what He is teaching the disciples. It is all connected.

He first tells them to be on their guard against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. The one thing He is making clear is the Pharisees and Sadducees do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Everything else that they would teach would be tainted with error because it is not found upon the rock of Jesus.

Jesus was fussing at the disciples for not getting the full meaning of the loaves and the fishes. The magnitude of what Jesus had just done had not sunk into their minds as yet. But He was giving them the promise of the His kingdom. And they would have to learn how to defeat the devil through prayer and fasting by binding and loosing.

We must learn to take the power away from the devil by binding the spirits. We all have spirits that have been assigned to torment us and drag us to hell. We must learn how they operate and use the authority we have been given to stop them.

A big part of our prayer time should be used to bind Satan, or he will continue to hurt our families. It must be done every day, or he will never let go. But as we grow stronger, he will grow weaker. As Jesus grows stronger and stronger in us, Satan will begin to flee.

Then He tells them they must lose sight of themselves and pick up their cross and follow Him after Peter just told Jesus He must never die like that. They had so much to learn.

In order to build His church, we must die to self and follow Jesus. We must not love this life or our old ways like TV and Secular music. That is the old man and his old interests. If we live and walk like Jesus, we will bind the spirits, and the gates of hell will not prevail in our life.

The church of today is full of many who are like the Pharisees and Sadducees. They hang onto this life but still preach Jesus. We are to be on guard of their teaching. There is much error in the church of today. They do not teach the difference between the clean and unclean, causing many to not have authority over the devil or be sanctified. We are sanctified by truth.

John 17:17 Sanctify them–purify, consecrate, separate them for Yourself, make them holy – by the Truth. Your Word is Truth. Amp.
