PSALM 48
- Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness.
- Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
- God is known in her palaces for a refuge. KJV
How many times have we sung the first verse, “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised?”
How are we to greatly praise Him? We cannot praise Him enough. He is so mighty and yet gentle. How big He is and yet stoops so low to be with us. He paid the biggest price anyone has ever paid for us. No one has ever suffered like He did. He has all the records in suffering.
He is above all things and rules in purity. We cannot imagine what purity is really like. We yearn for it, but it does not come. We see flickers of it at times. Then here comes the old nature to torment us again. But not Him. He is always pure and gentle. He is always just and true. He is always so very mighty and big. He sees all and knows all.
He can bring the mighty tempest in a whirlwind and tear up everything in its path. And yet be so calm telling everything to “be still,” He tells the sun when to shoot out its flames. He tells the moon how bright to shine in the night. He knows every star and has names for them. Everything belongs to Him. This world and all that is in it.
And yet He sits back and waits for the perfect time to rise up and say, “enough.” His plan for this world is perfect and He waits to take His place on the throne of His glory.
And He has a plan for us, to make us His dwelling place. To set us up on a High place while the rest of the world is below us. He will make a distinction for His people, and they will be known and honored. He will share His glory with them. And make them lights forever.
Yes, He is greatly to be praised.
