PSALM 31

19. Oh, how great is your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear, revere and worship You, goodness which You have wrought for those who trust and take refuge in You before the sons of men!

20. In the secret of Your presence You hide them from the plots of men; You keep them secretly in Your pavilion from the strife of tongues. Amp.

DEFINITIONS

Great -d) of much more than ordinary size.

Good -d) efficient, beneficial, fresh, valid, healthy, honorable, enjoyable, dependable, thorough, morally sound or excellent, virtuous, kind, well behaved, considerable, able, worth.

Goodness -d) the state or quality of being good; the best part or quality of a thing.

David seems to be overwhelmed with enemies. He is being slandered and threatened by man and the devil. He knows he is safe, but he is calling on the Lord to deliver him from all his afflictions. He is trusting the Lord to be his refuge and to silence the lying lips.

Why the slander from enemies? Why the lies? What is the reason for the enemy to lie about David. He is not happy with just killing David. He wants to kill his reputation and ruin any memory of him.

But David recalls the times when the Lord helped him. He starts talking about the Lord’s goodness? But the Lord’s goodness becomes ours and we can become like Him if we believe it. It takes faith and David has a lot of it.

It is only for those who take refuge in the Lord. Only for those in His presence, only for those in His pavilion. See all the different meanings of the word good. The Lord is always referencing His goodness.

Now David is claiming that goodness for those who fear and reverence and worship Him. His goodness He gives to His own. They end up Good with all of their failures and sins. They end up like God and His goodness because they love and respect and worship Him.
