17. And if we are His children, then we are His heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ – sharing His inheritance with him; only we must share His suffering if we are to share His glory. Amp.
DEFINITIONS
Suffering/Suffer -d) to undergo something painful or unpleasant: endure; to experience pain, harm, loss.
Heir -d) one who inherits or is entitled to inherit another’s property or title upon the other’s death.
Glory/Glorified -c) to exalt to dignity in company; glorify together.
There is one word that is looked down upon by most churches. Although the end times must be endured, there are still those who believe suffering is only because of sin and should not be in the church. All we have to do is look at so many others in the Bible who have suffered – Jesus being at the top of that list. He says in Zechariah 13:9 that He will bring the third part through the fire and refine them as silver is refined.
Galatians 6:17 From now on let no person trouble me by making it necessary for me to vindicate my apostolic authority and the divine truth of my gospel: for I bear on my body the brand marks of the Lord Jesus, the wounds, scars and other outward evidence of persecutions. These testify to His ownership of me!
Suffering leaves behind it fertile ground. It changes the way you see others. It changes you to be compassionate.
If we try to get along by aborting the trials in our life, we do ourselves a great injustice. We need the trials to prepare us and perfect us.
Then there are those who suffer more than others because of their calling. James, Peter and John were closer to Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. Not all the disciples would suffer as much as those 3 were called to suffer. They were building a church.
Then there are those who suffer because of their sin. There is no reward for the selfish suffering from sins affects. Many would get mad at God and blame Him for their pain. Many will fall away because they are not prepared to suffer.
When John was on Patmos, he had no fellowship with believers. He had no good food if any. He had no shelter. He suffered from the elements. He suffered the outdoors, bugs and wildlife. But look what he acquired. He had fellowship with Jesus and the angels. He was given the greatest revelation of all times.
If we want to share in His glory, we must suffer like Him. That is the Word of God. There is a price to pay. We are forgiven and bought by His blood. Now we must be the sacrifice and give Him our life no matter what the cost or we will not share in His glory or inheritance. Like Him, we must suffer. No one wants to hear that!
