LUKE 14:17
17. And at the hour for the supper, he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, “Come, for all is now ready.”
Jesus went for a meal at the house of a Pharisee and was telling a parable of a banquet. He told of how many made excuses for not coming. They all had more important things to do as their marriage and families, their jobs and properties. And said they were unable to come.
LUKE 14:24
24. For I tell you, that no one of those who were invited shall taste My supper.
This is a parable about the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. The Lord is inviting all who would come. Then He says, no one of those will taste of My supper! We must be very careful with our time and how we use it. We must give the Lord the best part of our lives. If we put anything before Him, we will suffer great loss.
LUKE 14:26
26. If anyone comes to me and does not hate his (own) father and mother (that is, in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God and likewise his wife and children and brothers and sisters, Yes and even his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
He is speaking these words right after He spoke about the banquet. The two are tied together in meaning. Of course, He is not telling us to hate our families. He wants us to be filled with His love and serve one another out of love. But He is showing how the people put their desires first and did not accept the invitation to the feast.
He is telling us how our attitude toward Him must be an attitude of love that nothing would come before our devotion to Him. We should be eager to receive any invitation from Him.
LUKE 14:33
33. So then, whoever of you does not forsake — renounce, surrender claim to give up, say goodbye to — all that he has cannot be My disciple. Amp.
He is adding this to the chapter saying if He calls you to go somewhere else, you may have to walk away from this life and all that you have like the disciples did. We must be willing to say goodbye to all we have in this life.
REVELATION 19:9
9. …Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.
This is saying not all will be called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. We must be careful how we use our time now. He is keeping track of every yes and no that we say. We might be shut out if our priorities are not right.
