MATTHEW 6:22-23
22. The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light;
23. But if your eye is unsound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the very light in you (your conscience) is darkened, how dense is that darkness. Amp.
DEFINITIONS
Conscience -d) a knowledge or feeling of right or wrong, with a compulsion to do right.
Darkness -c) darkness of error.
Eye -c) vision.
Sound -d) free from defect, damage or decay; normal, healthy; morally strong, honest, loyal, etc.
Unsound -d) false, ill-found.
This scripture is saying the eye or “conscience” is the lamp of the body. We have the ability within us to discern good and evil. We also have a free will to choose what we desire. We can do wrong if we desire or do right if we desire. We know that when we have children, we do not need to teach them to do wrong, they already know. It is the good we must teach them to do. And we know without the Holy Spirit we will never be consecrated and cleansed. We are speaking now of being without the Holy Spirit.
So yes, we have a conscience and when we do wrong, we feel guilty normally. But there are those who can do wrong more than others never showing any signs of guilt. The Lord knows who are wicked and who will come to Him.
We all have a spiritual eye that we need to be perfected. How we see things can determine how we live at times. We want to be full of light and not darkness. The darkness is false and leads away from the truth that the Lord is leading us to. If we continue to believe the lies of the enemy, he will lead us into this darkness.
This scripture comes right before He says, “No one can serve two masters,” (vs.24). If we have this darkness in our eyes we can be sidetracked and get way off the right path. He is speaking of money. You cannot be part greed and part good. The greed will eventually take over. It is all about what we love.
Matt. 6:21 For where your treasure is, your heart will be also.
If we truly love Jesus, that love will be the binding force that controls our behavior because our eye is sound. We may be tested at times but will always come out victoriously not in love with the physical riches that do not come close to comparing to the riches of Christ.
But many have not allowed themselves to taste and see how good the Lord can be and continually pull away from Him seeking out the riches of this world. He gives us what we want.
When we serve the Lord, He reveals His love and goodness in such wonderful ways that will make you come back for more. Then He says, “take all you want.” But it does come with a price. We must pick up our cross and follow Him laying down our life, choosing His. He will then lead us down a path that is hard but gloriously perfect in every way. But we must choose the light and turn away from the darkness and greed of this world.
Matt. 6:33 But seek for (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom, and His way of doing and being right, and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. Amp.
When we give up the things of this world and lose all desire for them as Jesus becomes our everything, that is when He gives them all back to you. We can have them because they are of no value to us anymore. We can take them or leave them. Our will is to do His will.
