PSALM 16:1

  1. Keep and protect me, O God, for in You I have found refuge, and in You do I put my trust and hide myself.

DEFINITIONS

Keep -d) to protect, guard and defend. To cause to stay in a specified condition, position, etc.; to preserve; to have or hold and not let go; to hold back.

Refuge -d) shelter or protection from danger, difficulty, etc.

Trust -d) firm belief in the honesty, reliability, etc. of some person or thing; confident expectation.

Hide -d) to keep secret, conceal.

Psalm 16 is a poem of David and is reflective of his life of faith in God. He knows that all safety comes from Him and starts out asking for protection. His refuge is the Lord because that is where he places his faith and hides himself in that holy place.

We all have faith. Where do we put that faith? Where do we go for help? The Lord judged Israel repeatedly for going to Egypt for help. After we are saved things change. We are not to live like we are in slavery to this world any longer.

The Lord needs no help to heal us, to provide for us or to protect us. So many still go to this world for help when the Lord is right before them with the answer. When we have symptoms of an illness or physical problem, that is what they are, “symptoms.” Satan is the father of lies and he will bring pain and tell you, you have big problems and better go get it checked out before it gets worse. If you believe him, you will have problems.

What does the Lord say? 1 Peter 2:24…By His wounds you have been healed.

This is past tense. We are to believe what God’s Word to us says and walk in it. The Lord does not have to give us any details for He has given us quite enough. If we believe we have already been healed, then why go to a man for help who is inferior to God’s Word and help?

When my good friend Cheryl was diagnosed with Cancer, she never owned it but said only that she had been diagnosed with Cancer. Our words have power to speak life or death. She was healed without surgery or chemo (as I have testified before).

There are times we need to go to the doctor and there are times that it is fear driving us there because we want someone to say all is well. That is not the faith or trust that the Lord is seeking. Faith is the substance of things not revealed to the senses. He does not always let us know because it is not the way of faith. We must make Him our only refuge with a confident expectation that He will do as He has said. He needs no help from man. God is able.

As the time of the end draws nearer, things may become desolate like the wilderness was for the Israelites. They had to depend on the Lord for everything. When He comes back, He will have a company of Davids who will confidently say:

Psalm 16:8 I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Amp.
