Reverence -c) fear, bow self-down.
How are we to fear and reverence the Lord? That is the people whom the scriptures say will be blessed.
We are not to fear only His ability to punish, that would not be worshipful. We know of His awesome power and goodness that flows from His righteous judgment. We fear offending Him, so we bow ourselves before Him in obedience to His commands.
He commanded the Israelites not to bow down to any figured stone or idol. That today would mean not to bow self-down in obedience to an idol or putting them before the Lord. Self must not come first in our life. An idol does not have to be a statue. It can be anything that you like that gets in the way of you devotion to the Lord.
At Pentecost Peter said:
Acts 2:38 And Peter answered them, Repent — change your views and purpose to accept the will of God in your inner selves instead of rejecting it — and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39. …and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Peter was telling them to repent in their hearts or rejecting the will of God. We all have a purpose, and we must seek the Lord on our own to know what that purpose is. We must obey what He says even if we end up like Jonah and He asks us to do something we do not want to do. If we do not accept His will for us, then we will enter into a stormy sea of trials until we surrender unto Him.
Then we desperately need the baptism of the Holy Spirit. There is power in the baptism that overflows in our life. We must seek Him for it. It is not automatic. You may get a sprinkling now and then, but we all need to be filled and controlled by His Spirit. That is a deep, needed blessing for us all.
Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power – ability, efficiency and might — when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends – the very bounds – of the earth.
Jesus told the disciples that the Holy Spirit was coming and would give them the power they needed to become the witnesses that would spread the Gospel. They were in full agreement, devoting themselves to prayer waiting for this promise.
So, it is the same with us, to receive the blessing of increase and power from on high, we must be in full agreement with one another while devoting ourselves to prayer. They were in one accord waiting for the promise. How many are impatient and go on in their own direction without the Holy Spirit leading them?
We must give the Lord time to prepare us for what is ahead. He knows our needs and will supply them if we let Him. We must change our inner man to accept His will alone. That is worshipful reverence.
