JUDGES 6:34 But the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with Himself and took possession of him; and he blew the trumpet, and the clan of Abiezer was gathered after him. Amp.
Gideon was leading the army to battle the Midianites. The Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with power and strength to get the job done. He did get the job done. What does it mean to be clothed with the Spirit?
2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if the tent which is our earthly home is destroyed (dissolved), we have from God a building, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2. Here indeed, in this (present abode, body), we sigh and groan inwardly, because we yearn to be clothed over — to put on our celestial body like a garment, to be fitted out — with our heavenly dwelling; 3. So that by putting it on we may not be found naked — without a body.
We need the clothing of the Holy Spirit or we are just flesh. The flesh is in opposition to God (Romans 8:7). If we are in the flesh then we are hostile to God and in need of a change. That is the Holy Spirits purpose for us. Without the Holy Spirit we are naked like Adam and Eve and not able to be in God’s presence. We cannot do this ourselves.
Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk and live habitually in the Holy Spirit –responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit; then you will not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh of human nature without God.
There is the reason for it all — Human Nature Without God! We cannot be with God on our own. All we have to bring to Him is sinful. We are not acceptable to Him in our flesh. We have no merit before Him. All we are is guilty of our sins. Jesus paid our sin debt and made a way for us to be acceptable to God.
We must receive the sacrifice He made for us through faith. Then we must take it further and be clothed with the Holy Spirit. That is where the power lies to live a life in victory over our sins.
We either live being controlled by our flesh which is death, or we live a life being controlled by the Holy Spirit which is life. We can get saved and believe, but if we do not give up our will to the Holy Spirit, our sin nature will control us. That is a miserable life. You may make it to heaven, but you may not. There is no joy or peace in that lifestyle. When trouble comes, you have no help. You will not stand before the enemy. You will not enjoy Jesus.
Ephesians 3:16 May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the Holy Spirit (Himself) –indwelling your innermost being and personality. Amp.
We have such precious promises at our disposal to make us extremely happy. Hanging on to the fleshly lifestyle is just no comparison to the great joy that comes from His treasure and glory.
Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore rule as king in your mortal (short-lived, perishable) bodies, to make you yield to their cravings and be subject to their lusts and evil passions.
We do have to make the choice to do the Lord’s will and tell the flesh no. It is not impossible. He gives us all the power we need and will be with us every step of the way.
